Bits of Bliss: Favorite 2014 Fall Trends (totally worth trying!)

Favorite 2014 Fall TrendsI can not believe it’s almost the end of September already! It feels like summer just started, and now it’s time to pull out the tea kettle and toss some throw blankets on the couch. Not that I’m complaining, mind you. I am SO ready for the heat to subside so I can pull out my leggings and start working on knitting myself a snugly, chunky eternity scarf! I’ve been filling up my Pinterest boards with adorable fall fashions, recipes to try, and loads of adorable accessories not only for me, but my home as well. In the honor of the Thanksgiving spirit of sharing (which will be upon us faster than you know it), I felt it only fitting to share with you my 5 favorite trends popping up this fall:

1. Pumpkin Spice!
It’s baaaack! The notorious Pumpkin Spice. For me, nothing creates a “fall atmosphere” more than the warm and spicy aroma of Pumpkin Spice. Not only is the smell comforting, warm and sweet, it also tastes great too! From scented candles, to muffins and bread recipes, to the delicious Pumpkin Spice Latte offered only during the cooler months at Starbucks, I just can’t get enough! If you tragically live in a place that doesn’t have a Starbucks within a 10 mile radius (like me), but you love that delicious PSL, here is a copycat recipe! Not convinced? Try out this recipe for delectable Apricot Pumpkin Bread by Mariani, or sample a few of the many pumpkin spice scented candles out there- my favorite version of this now modern classic scent is made by my amazingly talented friend, Angela, owner of Sissy’s Soy Candles. I also enjoy the Yankee Candle Co. version as well.

2. Scarves and leggings!
Seriously, stock up! In my humble opinion, you can never have too many scarves or pairs of leggings for the cooler months. Leggings are a great way to layer without being too bulky, and they offer so many colors and patterns, it’s hard to go wrong.  Pair them with boots for a cute cold weather ensemble. Just make sure that you are wearing something to cover the booty area if your leggings are on the thinner side. You don’t want to look tacky showing the world your undies! Also, if you don’t know how, teach yourself how to knit or crotchet so you can DIY your own snugly scarf. Or if that’s just not your thing, head on over to Etsy where there is a PLETHORA of beautifully handmade scarves to choose from. I bet you can’t pick just one!

3. Fair Isle Prints!
Nothing says cold weather wear to me like a chunky knit sweater! Wearing this classic and festive “Ugly Christmas Sweater” print is now tres chic! Dress it up over a cute skirt, or keep it casual with leggings or jeans. In it you are sure to evoke that cozy Nordic chalet feel! You can find this print on leggings, inside lining for boots, on knit caps, skirts, bags, and of course on scarves. Try this modern take on a classic and cozy print!

4. The half moon manicure, matte top coat & moody rich, deep colors
As much as I enjoyed the bright neon nail colors and abstract designs that were so popular this summer, I am loving the deeper moody colors covered with a matte top coat for nail trends this fall even more. I am also really liking the “half moon” and “v moon” designs that have been popping up all over the runways as well. It gives your manicure a classy yet artsy feel. Follow this easy tutorial to get this 1930’s inspired mani! So chic!

5. Bold interior color schemes, or a new take on neutral!
Matte black walls and rich jewel tone accent colors like indigo, fuchsia, emerald, and peacock blue are totally on trend in home decor for 2014. If you have adventurous and bold taste, this is a great way to update your decor. Not only is it sophisticated and chic, it lends for a much needed modern twist this fall. If you are more attracted to a neutral palate, grey is the new beige. I love how grey takes the bland out of the previously boring neutral, and gives it an updated and fresh look. Plus almost anything looks good next to grey!

New Series: Finding Fashion

So, no big surprise, but I was recently inspired…

It’s no secret that I love fashion design, clothing, haute couture, wearable art. Whatever you like to call it, j’adore! If I could, I would probably shop for a living if I knew that in doing so, I wouldn’t blow my paychecks “expanding” my closet. Like many, my taste in clothing is high end, but my realistic spending budget is mere pennies. So, while I was perusing Pinterest for beautiful pieces of wearable art to add to my “Fantasy Closet” collection, it struck me… Maybe I can challenge myself to “copy” my inspirations, and replicate the outfit by finding alternative articles of clothing for a fraction of the price- essentially doing a Look For Less series (which I’m calling “Finding Fashion”).
Before I begin, I think I must preface that doing a Look for Less series isn’t the challenge for me, since it’s not a new concept. (Plus, not to toot my own horn, I’m a very savvy budget shopper!) I’m not ruling out places like Forever 21, H&M, Charlotte Russe, The Gap, Zara, etc., which all offer well priced and fashionable clothing. I love shopping at those stores! But for this endeavor, I’m challenging myself to find comparable outfits specifically at Kmart, Walmart, Target, and Payless Shoes ONLY. I decided on these stores because now that we are living up in the mountains north of Napa and Santa Rosa, we are at least an hour drive from any mall (even going to Target and Payless is an all day excursion for us), and having a toddler in tow really makes my shopping endeavors quick and to the point. No meandering around and trying on a slew of adorable miscellaneous outfits at the mall anymore for this mama. At least not right now. But we won’t get into that subject right now, today is all about “Finding Fashion”.
I also decided to do “Finding Fashion” at Walmart, Kmart, Target, and Payless Shoe stores because the majority of our society is not incredibly wealthy, and it seems that most shop for clothing at budget friendly stores like Target (my preferred shopping spot), which offers relatively nice clothing and accessories for reasonable prices. Plus I have found that my purchases there have had pretty good longevity. But, if something gets ruined, I’m not super disappointed since I didn’t spend a pretty penny on the item.

With that being said, here is my first “Finding Fashion” challenge outfit:

I thought this was an attainable outfit to find similar pieces at the aforementioned stores. So I did a little shopping around and VOILA! I found a very similar outfit for only $102.85! For this specific inspiration outfit I did all of my shopping online, but if I had gone into the stores I probably would have been able to find some pieces on the clearance rack for sure!

Top: Walmart $7.88 (No Boundaries Juniors 3/4 Sleeve Striped Baseball Tee)
Jeans: Target $29.99 (Mossimo® Women’s Destructed Skinny Boyfriend Denim)
Boots: Kmart $29.99 (Bongo Women’s Estie Cognac Fold-Over Medium and Wide Combat Boot)
Purse: Target $34.99 (Merona® Timeless Collection Large Hobo Handbag)

I’m totally loving it, and to be honest, at first I was hesitant to even try. But now that I have a taste, I’m SO ready for more! Let’s do it!

Do you have any incredible “inspiration outfits” that you got at a great price shopping at stores like Target, Walmart, or Kmart? I’d love to hear all about it! OR, do you have a “challenge outfit” you’d like for me to find? Share your thoughts in the comments section below!
